In the context of management, a problem can be generally defined as the difference between what we want and what we have. In your approach, the goal is not used, and therefore it is impossible to identify the real problem. Diagnosis is analysis, while strategy is synthesis. You cannot synthesize anything from analysis alone. The discussions about what constitutes a good or bad strategy resemble blind men debating what makes a good or bad elephant.

I am really enjoying these but as a former PwC Partner I never thought of our firm as being good at data processing - amazing to see a different perspective!

And a favourite topic of mine - errors of Market Garden are well known. Operation Shingle (Anzio) makes an equally good study of strategic errors.
